Friday’s young rider qualifier sponsored by Southern Cross Horse Transport was taken out by the current NSW Young Rider Champion, Sarah McMillan riding the fantastic Belcam Armada. The main arena welcomed the young riders for the first time on Saturday with Leopoldo setting a challenging track which showcased the skill of the young riders. They showed their depth of talent with many of the riders completing the course stylishly. Natalie McNeil riding the lovely Vassandra took out top spot moving through to the final. The Young Rider Final was filled with a group of riders who have established themselves as a very talented group aboard some wonderful horses. Again the track was very testing, and there were only three clears in the first round. Natalie McNeil had the advantage of being the last rider out in the jump off, galloping to the last fence to secure the 2012 Southern Cross Horse Transport Young Rider title. The Jumping NSW 1.40 height class held on Friday afternoon showed the skill of the world cup combinations. Vicki Roycroft jumped into first place, with a stylish clear on Kartoon De Breve that set a pace none of the following riders could beat early in the jump off. A step up in height on Saturday saw riders return for the 1.45m class sponsored by Europa Saddlery Berry. A challenging two phase course had only two competitors making it through to the second phase. The class was won by Brook Dobbin riding Advisor, no stranger to victory in the main arena at the Summer Classic they completed the course with ease. Sunday’s feature event, the World Cup qualifier sponsored by Equestrian NSW, Equestrian Australia HPP/ASC and Jumping NSW, was set over an extremely technical, careful track set by Leopoldo Palacios. Unfortunately one of the firm favorites, Tom McDermott was hit by a nasty stomach virus. He attempted to jump on his first ride CP Rolex but elected to retire and also withdraw his second ride CP Romantic Dream. Two of the leading contenders in the class added to the thrills for the crowd. Paul Athanasoff had an unexpected dismount off his experienced Wirragulla Nicklaus when they misread the first part of the combination and Brook Dobbin’s Adviser refused to jump a massive spread. There were no clears over the two rounds of competition with only Sharon Slater riding CP Ulixes coming close, having a foot in the water. They ended up on a total of nine penalties over the two rounds. Sharon and CP Ulixes are shaping up as one of Australia’s top world cup combinations. Second place went to Rory Hovell (WA) riding the lovely stallion Yalambi’s Val D’Isere. They had a couple of rails down towards the end of the track in the first round, but they showed lot of potential for a great future in the sport. third place went to Alison Rowland (WA) riding Bickley Brook Bella. Alison took out top spot in the overall Australian World Cup League standings and Bickley Brook Bella took out the Golden Grand Award for leading horse. fourth place went to Billy Raymont (QLD), 2011 winner, riding the experienced, scopey thoroughbred, Stardom. They were awarded best presented male rider. Fifth place went to Evie Buller (WA) on another Yalambi horse, Yalambi’s Landor. Evie ended up in second place behind Alison in the overall world cup rankings. The Summer Classic World Cup is known for being one of the most challenging on the circuit and the competition reinforced that reputation. With three days of exciting jumping action held over three rings, massive entries, great sponsors and an army of volunteers supporting the ESP team of Jane Frankum and John Vallance, the Summer Classic again proved itself to be one of the grandest shows in Australia. It’ll be back in 2014... don’t miss it!
