State Championships 2012 The core committee for 2012 consisted of Vicki Burgess, Judy Fasher, Michelle Becchio, Joanne Cocksedge, Liz Jones, Jenny Denby, Linda Beneke, Helen Wilkinson and Elysha Sargent. The main event for this year, the NSW Championships, was held on its usual date on the first weekend of March at SIEC. We ran into some surprising issues with an abnormal amount of rain leading up to and during the event’s early days and had some new problems in officials and riders being late scratchings when they weren’t able to make it to the venue due to being flooded in or others requiring stabling at the last minute as they didn’t wish to be flooded out! The rain itself cleared up for the weekend and the waters subsided. The SIEC grounds and facilities were sensational throughout the weekend and it was declared by the TD, Jim Scobie, that it was safe to continue however it was interesting to see the grey horses on the cross country course and in some of the dressage arenas looking quite a lot like pintos. Our usual stable managers Mike and Sandy were not able to make the trip over due to health reasons and although they were sorely missed we didn’t lose anything in having the expertise and relaxed manner of Mark Wiggett looking after the stables in their place. Tina Stafford was vital behind the scenes as a support to Vicki and Elysha prior to the event and her ability to construct a draw of over 2000 individual draw times without any disasters remains unparalleled! Sally Smith has been our scorer for a number of years now and we look forward to her visit each year as she is so calm and the job just gets done. We also appreciate the assistance offered by Kia Sanders, Amy Redman, Rebecca Andrews and Sally Andrews in the office – without this well-oiled team the championships would not run as smoothly. As always we were also lucky to secure Fiona Hughes and Charlie Brister to run the PA each day and thank our vets Derek Major (swabbing) and Selina Sylvester (general advisor) for their assistance. Entries were again through Nominate and the assistance that they are able to offer in the lead up and during the event is fantastic. Trade stands were also popular this year which generated a small amount of extra income however for the traders, in most cases they would have been well advised to be well stocked in wet weather gear! 1 2 3 60
