3 The inaugural High Performance Pathways Camp was held in November 2012 near Canberra, with Boyd Exell attending in his role as both the National Performance Director and elite coach for the Programme. This camp was organised and hosted by the Southern Carriage Driving Club at the Wilcoxson’s property at Bungendore NSW. Drivers from the A Squad and Future Squad travelled from four states (SA, Vic, Qld and NSW) to attend the four day intensive camp under the guidance of Boyd and with the help of Catherine McCoy (Assistant National Performance Director), Max Pearce and the carriage driving selectors, Judy Meredith (Chair), Bob Edwards and Margaret O’Brien. The four day structure of the camp was an educational and skill intensive experience for all who attended. The next High Performance Pathways Camp is scheduled in the first half of 2013. Southern Carriage Driving Club The Southern Carriage Driving Club organised a Boyd Exell Carriage Driving Clinic which was conducted in January 2012 in Goulburn NSW. This clinic was booked out months in advance with a large number of spectators attending each day to gain invaluable knowledge. All those driving at the clinic were stretched both physically and mentally to take their driving and their equine to the next level. Niki van Buuren of Canberra, was invited to drive at the World Para-Driving Championships in Breda, Holland in September 2012. Niki started out in riding but transferred her equestrian talent to carriage driving in 2011. She is an amazing driver as she drives with special looped reins over her wrists as Niki lost her fingers and sustained other horrific burns in the Canberra bushfires in 2003. Niki trained all year with Max Pearce in Goulburn, readying herself for the trip overseas to represent Australia. Unfortunately, she was involved in a car accident on the June long weekend on her way to a competition in the Southern Highlands and was unable to continue her journey to the World Para-Driving Championships because of injuries sustained in that accident. 4 1) Lyn Curnew, NSW HP Futures squad driver put through her paces at the talent ID day 2) Team of four 3) Boyd Exell teaching at High Performance clinic 4) Boyd Exell discussing gear at the clinic 5) Max Pearce and Bob Rosetta cleaning up after the clinic Images by Max Pearce and Andrea Webb 5 27
