International Competitions Lani Maher and Lee Briggs escaped their Southern Highlands winter for the months of June to August to compete in Europe as part of Vaulting Team Australia. Lani, with full support of her school, Frensham, packed her school books, and based herself in Dortman, Germany, courtesy of her German vaulting families. From here Lani was fortunate to train with Stefan Lotzman at his stables and established a great partnership with Stefan’s horse Riva. This horse was relatively new to the big smoke but Lani felt that the combination was right and she was very grateful to Stefan for committing to taking them to Krumke, Aachen and Le Mans. Lee, in his gap year, set off on his first international competition circuit individually. He joined a stable near Hannover with Katrin Harder Moorman and again formed a great working relationship with his stables, lunger, coach and horses. CVI Krumke, 2012 The competition was based in the small town of Krumke, Germany, held in a beautiful, well surfaced arena which was the centre of town. This was a great competition for our Aussie vaulters and so much fun - a great start for both in their first European competition. As this was a qualification for both European and World Championships for many countries, the stakes were set extremely high. It was unlike any competition they had experienced before. Despite the high importance of this competition Lani and Lee felt very warmly welcomed and supported and travelled with their own German fan club waving the Aussie flag. Lani competed as a junior and was thrilled to finish seventh out of 31 competitors, a great start to her international comp year. ”My horse, Riva, was fantastic and together with my lunger Stefan Lotzman, I have to say we made a pretty good team” says Lani. Lee put in a great performance, although his horse was a little overawed by the situation, he placed seventh on Galaxo, lunged by Katrin. CHIO Aachen No other vaulting tournament in the world attracts equestrian vaulters as the CHIO Aachen. This is a prestigious invitation only event and Australia is very proud and fortunate to be invited to compete with the best of the best. Lani and Lee, together with Emma Moulds from South Australia, were Team Australia and they had the time of their lives. The competition was thrilling and set in a superb purpose built arena in the huge show grounds of the World Horse Festival. The large audience was engaged, enthusiastic and their hype totally contributed to the most amazing atmosphere as world class vaulting was showcased in front of their eyes. Lani on Riva, lunged by Stefan, Lee vaulting on Dreamboy lunged by Katrin and Emma on Czambul2 also lunged by Stefan did Australia proud at this very special event. 1) Lee Briggs at the CVI in Krumke, Germany 2) Lani Maher at CHIO Aachen, Germany Images by Daniel Kaiser 1 2 107
