5 6 Equitana – Grand Final Horse lovers from all over Australia and around the world headed to Sydney November 10th – 13th to be part of the biggest and most exciting equine spectacular in the southern hemisphere – Equitana Sydney. Equestrian Australia joined forces with Equitana to develop and run a national annual Grand Final for dressage, jumping and express eventing with qualifying events held throughout the year all over Australia. David Dobson from Wanneroo in Western Australia won Friday night’s $20,000 Jumping Grand Prix Final riding AS Akon. In front of a full house of more than 4,000 spectators at the Dome Arena, Dobson a clear second round to take the honours ahead of Queenslander Cathy Graham riding Da Vinci’s Pride and Chris Chugg from Glossodia third riding Alondra. Dobson riding AS Akon, a horse which he bred himself, the two-time Australian representative said he knew exactly what he had to do heading to the second round. “I went into the second round thinking if the guys behind me go clear they’ll go faster than me because they’re on more experienced horses. So I had to take in account the crowd, atmosphere and the jumps got fairly big towards 7 the end I was just proud he (AS Akson) was able to jump the clear round. 8 Queensland’s Cathy Graham riding Da Vinci’s Pride was in the lead after the first round and was the only person to have a clear first round. But with two rails down in the second round, she was forced to settle for second place. Five-time National Jumping Champion Chris Chugg riding Alondra had to settle for third place with one rail down in the first round and two in the second. Olympic course designer John Vallance designed a careful testing course for the Jumping Grand Final field with just one clear round in the first round and two in the second.
