Its action is three fold: 1. Passivates any existing rust corrosion products to form a firm protective barrier. 2. Inhibits the development of further corrosion. 3. Provides an extremely durable coating for exterior exposure. Emer-Gard Primer Type 2 provides excellent durability over surfaces prepared in a minimum fashion, and can be applied directly to rusted steelwork after thoroughly wire brushing. Recommended Uses For all new or old steel surfaces in industrial, commercial or domestic situations. Used where high durability is desired when only a minimum of surface preparation is possible, for practical, safety or reasons of economy. Emer-Gard Primer Type 2 may be successfully used on structural steel, wrought iron, storage tanks, pipe lines, bridges, marine installations, mines, refineries etc. May be left exposed, however we recommend it be top coated with Emer-Clad. For application in special conditions, consult your local Parchem sales office for detailed information. Surface Preparation Before using Emer-Gard Primer Type 2, it is important to ensure that the surface to which it is to be applied is clean, dry and free from rust, scale, dust and any loose material. All contaminants such as oil, grease fungi, stain or any surface laitance must be removed to ensure adequate development of bond when the primer is applied. For optimum performance steel surfaces to be abrasive blast cleaned in accordance with AS1627.4 Class 2.5. Alternatively surfaces to be hand or power tool cleaned, these should be carried out with care to ensure surfaces are not burnished. For heavily corroded areas, needle gun or similar method may be necessary prior to hand cleaning, treat any remaining rust with Emer-Tan, prior to the application of Emer-Gard Primer Type 2. Application Emer-Gard Primer Type 2 may be applied by brush or roller. On rusted or poorly prepared surfaces, brush application is recommended to obtain maximum penetration and adhesion. The primer will be touch dry in approximately 1 hour and may be overcoated in 2 hours with Emer-Clad or other conventional coatings under normal conditions. This can be assessed at the time of application and is influenced by ambient temperature and type of surface treated. Note: Care should be taken with Emer-Gard Primer Type 2 in enclosed spaces without ensuring adequate ventilation. Do not smoke, or allow flames when product is in use or is drying.
